Is Sildenafil 20 mg the Same as Viagra?

Sildenafil citrate, commonly known as an active ingredient in Viagra, has become a popular treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). Most people know that Viagra exists in various dosages-including 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg-but do not know whether sildenafil 20 mg is the same as Viagra for ED purposes. Interestingly, sildenafil 20 mg is not marketed as Viagra. Instead, it’s mainly used for another reason. The following blog post will discuss – is Sildenafil 20 mg the same as Viagra? What it’s used for, what adverse effects it might have, and alternative treatments for ED.

What is Sildenafil 20 mg Used For?

This medication is known by the brand name Revatio® and is FDA-approved for pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is high blood pressure in the lungs. Sildenafil works to ease symptoms associated with PAH by dilating the blood vessels, thereby reducing strain on the heart and lungs.

Sildenafil 20 mg, although it contains the same active ingredient as Viagra, is not typically considered an ED medication. The most commonly prescribed dosages of Viagra are 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg. A 20 mg dose is likely too low in most cases for adequate erection in a man who has been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction. It might provide a better erection for some sensitive patients who cannot tolerate higher doses.

How Does Sildenafil Work?

Sildenafil is a class of medication known as PDE5 inhibitors. It is a drug that relaxes blood vessels and increases blood flow to certain parts of the body. Using this drug for ED enhances blood circulation to the penile area so that it allows an erection when sexually excited. The same mechanism leads to the lowering of high blood pressure in the lungs when this drug is prescribed for PAH.

It is not, however, the first prescription for ED. A sildenafil 20 mg dose will promote blood flow and cure mild conditions of erectile dysfunction; still, the most commonly used dosage is 50 mg followed by 100 mg which is the most commonly prescribed by physicians.

Is Sildenafil 20 mg the Same as Viagra when Treating ED?

While sildenafil 20 mg and Viagra contain the same active chemical, they are different in treating erectile dysfunction. Here are some main differences:

Approved Indications: Viagra is only FDA-approved for ED, while sildenafil 20 mg or Revatio is only FDA-approved for PAH. Though there is off-label use for ED, it is less common.

Dosage Variability: Viagra comes in higher strengths (25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg) to serve the diverse requirements of different patients suffering from different stages of ED. Typically, a sildenafil dose of 20 mg may be inadequate to treat moderate or severe cases of ED.

Efficiency for ED: Studies have shown that high doses of sildenafil are more effective in the improvement of erections. While 63% of the patients who received 25 mg showed better erections, 82% of those who received 100 mg reported better erections. Therefore, using a 20 mg dose for ED might not be as effective.

Pros and Cons of Using Sildenafil 20 mg for ED

It’s one of those drugs when taken in 20 mg sildenafil for erectile dysfunction-though this comes with advantages over the standard higher dosage Viagra. Here are a few:

Pros

It comes with lower risks for adverse effects because of a decreased chance of the occurrence; therefore, it is safe to prescribe for individuals who tend to react more strongly to high dosages.

This is somewhat more affordable, especially to use for some who are taking off-label doses for their minor ED issues.

Moderate Effectiveness for Severe ED: The treatment may not be effective enough for men with moderate or severe erectile dysfunction.

Side Effects and Risks of Sildenafil

As with any other drug, sildenafil can bring about side effects. As safe as it might seem with the right dosages applied, sildenafil may be connected to various reactions with which people should be conversant. Some of these reactions include:

  • Headaches
  • Flushing
  • Nausea
  • Nasal congestion
  • Back or muscle pain
  • Dizziness

More serious side effects include long or painful erections, sudden vision loss, or heart problems, and medical attention is required. Sildenafil 20 mg may not be appropriate for people with specific health conditions, including severe heart disease, low blood pressure, or history of strokes.

Drug Interactions to Watch Out For

Many drugs interact with sildenafil and produce hazardous side effects. The following drugs should not be taken together with sildenafil:

Nitrates: These are generally prescribed for angina, and a dangerous fall in blood pressure can be triggered when nitrates are used together with sildenafil.

Other PDE5 Inhibitors: Sildenafil may also interact with other drugs to treat erectile dysfunction, like tadalafil (Cialis®) or vardenafil (Levitra®), and thus may lead to adverse effects.

Some Antibiotics and Antifungals: Erythromycin and ketoconazole may interact with sildenafil.

Alcohol: Though it is not restricted, alcoholic consumption should be less during your use of sildenafil in order to avoid blood pressure reactions also

Alternatives of Sildenafil 20mg for Erectile Dysfunction

When sildenafil 20mg dose does not work to provide treatment of erectile dysfunction, there are still other options through which the condition could be managed.

Higher Doses of Sildenafil (25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg): Talk to your doctor if you need a higher dose.

Other PDE5 Inhibitors: Other drugs that may be prescribed include tadalafil (Cialis®), avanafil (Stendra®), or vardenafil (Levitra®).

Non-Medication Treatments: Lifestyle changes in diet and exercise or counseling can also improve erectile function.
